October is National Adopt a Shelter Dog month, and you can celebrate by giving one of them a big gift — welcoming them into your home.

Here in Colorado, dogs are a part of our lifestyle, and sometimes, it's actually challenging to find a dog at a shelter (which is a good thing). As of right now, there are currently only three dogs available for adoption at Larimer Humane Society in Loveland, but shelters like Humane Society of Weld County are really full.

'Since 1981, American Humane has celebrated Adopt-a-Dog Month each October in an effort to help the estimated 3-4 million animals waiting in shelters every year get the loving, forever homes that they deserve.' - American Humane

If you're considering adopting, puppies are fun and all, but if you want a mature, mellow addition to the family, an older dog may be the way to go. Fortunately, there are a handful of those available and you could be the one to give these dogs a few great loving years.

If you can't adopt, you can still help local shelter dogs by fostering or by donating money, supplies or your time to rescues. If you can adopt, check out the gallery below to see older dogs in need of fur-ever homes at Larimer Humane Society in Loveland, Humane Society of Weld County in Greeley and Big Bones Canine Rescue in Windsor.
