You Are What Your Record Says You Are
We have a poster that hangs in the hallway of our office. It's a quote by former NFL head coach Bill Parcells that says, "You are what your record says you are." The point is that you can't reason distance between you and what you accomplish (or don't accomplish.) Results speak for themselves.
The rest of the speaking we do is generally everything else. The excuses, the rationalizing, the woulda-coulda-shouldas.
While all the intangibles really do matter (why, how, where, who), the one thing that is being measured (what) is the tangible by which we will be judged. Your friendly disposition, positive attitude, and good heart, while incredibly important, become meaningless if you aren't making the widgets the world expects from you.
Bill Parcells will be the first to tell you that if your team goes 3-13, it won't matter how good your plan was, or how many of your players were injured, or how nice of a person you are. You were hired to win, and now a new coach will have the opportunity to give it a try.
