What Words Or Phrases Annoy You The Most
OK, for me political doublespeak is one of the most annoying uses and twists of the English language. When politicians or corporate types use these type of terms: downsize, rightsize, headcount adjustment, internment facility: prison, public donation, shared sacrifice: taxes... Let's take a look at a survey: Teenage girls might figure heavily into this.
For the second year in a row, Americans ranked "whatever" as the most annoying word or phrase used in conversation, according to a new 2010 Marist Poll. Last year, "whatever" was crowned most-hated word by 47 percent of those polled. This year, the percentage was a little less.
* 39% were most irritated by the oft-used "whatever"
* 28% found the term "like" the most offensive
* The rhetorical "you know what I mean?" was ranked third by 15% of those polled
* 10% were most annoyed by the phrase "to tell you the truth"
