Wellington Mayor Urges Parents to Address Kids’ Dangerous E-Bike Riding Habits
Growing up in Colorado, like in any state, means riding your bike around town; it's a "rite of passage." However, kids can be rebellious; rebellious kids on their bikes have gotten Wellington's Mayor upset enough to post her sentiments on Facebook, addressed to the parents of the town.
When I was growing up in Loveland, I had a bike, as we all did. That was 50 years ago, when the world was "smaller." I can attest that my friends and I did not always ride as safely as we should have.
We saw some bumps and bruises, scraped knees, and chipped teeth, but (luckily) none of us were ever in a serious crash. If we had e-bikes back then, things could have turned out much differently.
Wellington Mayor Has Had Enough of How Kids Ride E-Bikes in Town
Rebekka Dailey became the new Mayor of Wellington in April of 2026. In early September of 2026, Dailey took to Facebook to address her concerns about what she'd been seeing when it comes to kids in Wellington on their bikes and e-bikes.
Hey parents. Get it together! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
I am angry. And I am scared.
Every single day, I see many kids riding their bikes through red lights, blowing through intersections, ignoring traffic laws, and putting themselves and innocent drivers at risk.
Do we really have to wait for a kid to die before parents take responsibility for the behavior of their children?
I hope not.
Because this is not solely the Mayor’s job.
It is not solely the police department’s job.
It is not solely the school’s job.
It is YOUR job, too.
There is one Mayor.
There are six deputies serving our entire town.
Yet there are hundreds of parents.
I cannot follow every child around town every day. Our deputies cannot be everywhere. Our schools cannot supervise kids every moment they are outside of school.
Are you following your kids?
Parents should teach their children.
Red lights mean stop.
Stop signs mean stop.
Traffic laws apply to “bicycles,” too.
These are not complicated concepts.
And I should not have to create more laws for your kids to break. Some parents are unwilling to make sure their children follow the laws that already exist to keep them safe. The board made the laws, and your kids are breaking them. 90% of the kids on these moto bikes are breaking laws. Surely not your kid…. WRONG.
I see it when I am simply driving through town.
Kids riding directly through red lights.
Kids entering intersections without looking.
Kids putting themselves directly in the path of vehicles.
And then what?
Are we going to wait until a driver cannot stop in time?
Are we going to wait until more kids are seriously injured?
Are we going to wait until a child dies?
Because once that happens, there is no taking it back.
No ticket fixes it.
No new law fixes it.
No meeting fixes it.
No apology fixes it.
So please, parents.
TAKE RESPONSIBILITY NOW.
Talk to your kids.
Teach them.
Set expectations.
Hold them accountable.
Because I will continue doing my job.
The deputies will continue doing theirs.
The schools will continue doing theirs.
But your children are YOUR responsibility, too.
Please do not wait for tragedy to force you to take it seriously.
Do better.
Of course, Wellington is hardly alone when it comes to seeing kids being unsafe while riding their e-bikes and e-scooters. With our radio stations right on Main Street in Downtown Windsor, I see many kids, each day, "fly by" on the sidewalk at an unnecessarily high rate of speed; it makes me hope that they're not going to end up in the hospital, or worse.
