A Fort Lupton police officer was indicted by a grand jury on Thursday for his role in a fatal shooting.

The Weld County District Attorney’s Office charged officer Zachary Helbig with one count of Manslaughter, a Class 4 felony. A judge has set bond at $50,000.

Helbig was involved in the fatal shooting of Shawn Billinger on January 16 during a disturbance call. Billinger allegedly walked rapidly toward Helbig yelling “kill me” with nothing in his hands.

Helbig fired one shot at Billinger, striking him in the chest. Billinger was pronounced dead at the scene.

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in the court of law. An arrest or indictment is merely an accusation.
