U.S. Annual Spending on Pets? Over 60 Billion!

My family spends a little more than we have to on our dog. There is no doubt about that. When she had to have surgery on her knee, we shelled out a couple grand for that one. Other than that though, we'll have her groomed from time to time, buy extra treats and supplements to keep her happy and healthy, and when we have to put her in a kennel, we pay for the extra walk and playtime every day.

According to an MSN.com article, Americans spend $61 billion annually on their pets.

Overall, Americans spend about $500 on average, or 1% of their annual budget on their pets. That means they drop more dollars on pet supplies than on beer, vodka and other alcohol. They spend more on pets than on men's and boy's clothing.
