The 2nd season of the Voice premiered after the Super Bowl last night, and the show, at least the contestant selection part of it, is a winner. NBC has been searching for years to any kind of answer to American Idol, and while the Voice might not have the amount of viewers or loyal fans as Idol, the contestant selection segment is very compelling.

Since Idol took the straight forward, 'discover a star' format, other networks were forced to flirt with gimmicks like conveyer belts, expanded formats that include more than just singing, and group contests. The Voice is the one show that is only about singing and only about discovering the next big thing.

Yes, they have a gimmick, but it works! Judges have their chairs turned so they can't see the person singing, but the audience and viewers can. If the one of the judges likes what they hear, they hit a button and it turns their chair around. Their surprise at not seeing what they expected is priceless. If more than one judge likes what they hear, they must then sell themselves to the singer to get them to join the team.

After the selection, they go into competition mode, and this, though interesting, is not quite as compelling. True, it is inspiring to see the amount of knowledge the shows' stars(Christina Aguilera, Ceelo, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton) have  about their craft, but it just doesn't bring as much punch as the selection process.

So for the next couple of weeks, if you are looking for something good to watch, check out the Voice and let us know what you think!.
