Surprising Denver Bronco To Likely Hit Free Agency This Offseason
Three years ago in Denver, there wasn't all that much to be excited about but there was a bright spot that showed up on our doorstep via the 2021 draft.
A second round pick that year came onto the scene and got Broncos fans excited about the potential of a really great running back on the team for years to come. However, an season-ending injury his second year ultimately put a pin in those hopes, as years three and four - under Sean Payton as head coach - have not been as productive as hoped.
Running Back Javonte Williams' rookie contract as a Bronco has come to an end, and the team is not expected to resign him for the 2025 season.
After rushing for just 513 yards and 4 TDs in 2024, while sharing the load with Jaleel McLaughlin and Audric Estime, it would appear that Williams' best chance to be "the guy" in 2025 will be for another team and is expected to hit free agency.
Chris Tomasson of the Denver Gazette was the first to report that Williams will probably not return, and points out that he hasn't been the same player since suffering the season-ending ACL injury back in 2022. He also predicts that the other guys on the roster won't necessarily end up "the guy" for Denver next year either - that instead the Broncos will likely try to find their next RB1 in free agency or in the upcoming draft this spring.
It's somewhat sad that Javonte's likely finish in Denver will be not living up to the expectations we initially had for him as fans when he was a rookie. But goes to show - yet again - the old saying that the NFL stands for "not for long" is pretty true.
