Steamboat Announces Massive Expansion for 20/21 Winter Season

Skiers and riders rejoice – it's just been announced that Steamboat Resort will be adding 355 additional acres of new terrain in time for the 20/21 season. 

This major expansion means Steamboat will soon become the third largest ski area in the state of Colorado. This is the first time the resort has expanded its grounds in 20 years. The extra acreage will be in the Pioneer Ridge area, which is north of the resort's current boundary, and will feature mostly advanced/expert terrain. Work in this location is expected to begin once the resort closes in mid-April and should be done in time for the next ski season. Once completed, it will increase the resort to 3,320 total acres.

According to the Denver Post, Steamboat's parent company, Alterra Mountain Co., is investing a total of $223 million across its 15 North American destinations. This will go towards capital improvements at each place.

Besides adding more runs and available terrain, Steamboat will be making some much needed improvements and enhancements to other areas of the resort. For one, the resort will be receiving important upgrades to its snowmaking and snowcat fleets.

The resort's popular Hazie's Restaurant, located at the top of the gondola, will also be receiving several updates and enhancements. This will be the first makeover the restaurant/lodge has gotten since opening in 1986. Hazie's is getting a ski/snowboard boot check for guests, as well as more seating, a larger lounge and bar area, a  wine cellar, plus new carpet and lighting. There will also be way more options on both the food and beverage menus.

Improving Steamboat's employee housing is also part of the plan. The Ponds, where a majority of the resort's employees reside, will be receiving new furniture, flooring, roof replacements, and kitchen and bath updates.
