A new way of getting a new car/vehicle in Colorado was approved in December of 2025, and it will mean seeing the brand "Scout" back out on the streets and roads of The Centennial State. You won't see these Scouts at any dealerships; not because their not allowed, but because that's the way they want it.

A Brand That Dates Back Over 60 Years Returns to Colorado

Having grown up in the 70s and 80s, I saw more than a few Scouts out on streets around my hometown of Loveland. They looked so "cool," I wanted to own one when I got older. The first ones rolled out by International Harvester, hit the road (and off-road) in 1960 with the Scout 80; 20 years later, things pretty much came to an end for the International Scout. 45+ years later, two of the Scout vehicles are returning: the Terra and the Traveler.

The New Scouts Are Electric But Can Also Have Gas Power

In 2027, we'll be seeing new Terras and Travelers out on the roads; this time around with backing from Volkswagen, which bought out the International Harvester truck division in 1986. They'll mainly be electric but can be outfitted with a gas-generator "Range Extender" in the rear of the vehicle. With only electric the range is about 350 miles, adding the Range Extender can provide about 150 miles more.

Colorado OK's Scout Not Using Usual Dealerships, Since They're Electric

According to the Denver Post, Governor Polis amended a statute in 2020, letting car manufactures own, operate and control their own dealerships only if they make electric cars exclusively. It took some fighting with the Motor Vehicle Dealer Board of Colorado, but Scout Motors was given the OK to sell directly to consumers through their site (@ $60,000 w/$100 down) while retail locations (across the U.S.) will come later.
