When you think about how much Coloradans spend on getting their vehicles worked on each year, the thought of someone in Fort Collins teaching others things they can do themselves is terrific.

Who Teaches the 'Cars 101' Class in Fort Collins, Colorado?

I found out about 'Safety Sadie's Car Class' when it popped up on my Facebook feed, and I thought it sounded like a great idea, especially since it's free. The monthly classes take place at Campus Auto Repair.

Safety Sadie reached out to let me know that she used to work there from 2012-2019; she and the owner remain good friends and he lets her use his parking lot for the classes.

From Safety Sadie:

Currently I am a heavy duty diesel mechanic and have been for the last 7 years, but I still work on my own cars and projects and have a close connection with the Fort Collins automotive repair scene.

The 3-hour class, for up to 10 people per session, deals with learning to identify and check on liquids, how to jump-start a car, as well as changing/replacing a spare tire. It's a beginner class, for sure, but it can go a long way in helping someone feel comfortable about "working on" their vehicle. I can see single mothers, teens, CSU students, and even older folks attending a class.

The '101' Classes in Fort Collins are Free, But

It's great of Safety Sadie to take time out of her schedule for these free classes, but she does hope that people attending will make a donation to cover the cost of supplies needed to run the classes when they sign up.

Campus Auto Repair dates back to 1996, when it first opened as Campus West Texaco off of Shields and Elizabeth. The original owner's son, David, now runs Campus Auto Repair at its current location, across from Dairy Queen and just north of The Human Bean on South College.

Big, bold, and built different — these ’70s cars looked and felt like nothing on the road today. Take a ride back and see them in their prime. [And we did our best to identify the models and dates, so if we got it wrong, gearheads, don’t come after us!]
