Red Rocks Amphitheatre is an amazing concert venue, without question. In an effort to make the experience more accessible with a new app.

I attended the Nathaniel Raitliff and the Night Sweats concert on August 24, 2021, at Red Rocks and couldn't have had a better time, even though my friend and I were way, way in the back, up by the main concourse. 'Nathaniel! We're up here!'

While we were there, I made a point to try out the new MixHalo app that's available to help people hear what's happening from the stage, when far back, like we were.

How Does it work, exactly?

It's fairly simple. With the app, you can connect to the soundboard at the venue with headphones. It makes a lot of sense, as (most) everything on stage is mic'd up and running through the board, why not use technology to push that audio out to the crowd?

The app works best with wired headphones because with Bluetooth headphones, or earbuds, there is a latency (delay) that might distract the experience. I purchased a $10 pair of wired earbuds for my testing.

How did it go?

I had already downloaded the app:

I opened the app and connected to the designated wi-fi 'channel' which was the Red Rocks soundboard. And there it was: the audio being delivered to the board from stage was also being delivered to my earbuds.

It was pretty neat, I bet with a better pair of wired earbuds or headphones, the sound would have been richer, but I did hear the performers on stage.

It got a little 'sketchy' as I moved around; it could have been the cheap earbuds I brought or the connection, but it wasn't that big of a deal, anyway. I would suggest bringing a designated 'wifi' phone/device to use this app with, this way you don't have to worry about taking photos or sending texts, which will disrupt the MixHalo app.

It was later when Nathaniel Raitliff and the Night Sweats were on stage (and us being way up back by the concourse,) that I saw how this is great for those seats. Back there, you are pretty far from the stage, and even with the powerful PA system, the music doesn't always 'reach' like it does when you are closer to the stage.

I can see music fans who have trouble hearing, really taking advantage of the app, as well as fans who really want to hear every bit of sound, unobstructed by wind, or crowd noise, or general sound decay due to distance.

I give MixHalo 3.5 out of 5 stars. Definitely worth a shot for those who need the 'boost.'
