Play by play is an art.

I felt so lucky to have watched it be done by a real pro when we had the Colorado Eagles hockey team on 99.9 The Point. It made little sense to have hockey on a music station, but still, it was great to watch Tori Holt call a game from the booth, right next to him, and to do color commentary as well. Both of those jobs, with the voices and personalities of the right people, can be as entertaining as anything in broadcasting.

One of the most difficult things for a broadcaster to do is to set themselves apart as one of a kind. It's a feat rarely accomplished, so if you grew up with a sports voice that was like no other (mine was Myron Cope), consider yourself lucky.

Sometimes, pro talkers use the same call to establish consistency. Others resort to gimmicky phrases and catchy schtick to make their sound stick.

I'm not sure where Pablo Ramirez comes in on this, because, I no habla Espanol. However, I know that I've remembered him since the first time I heard him announce a goal.

When I heard him announce Carli Lloyed third goal, I wanted to try it.
