Olivia Newton John is at the Union Colony Civic Center on Friday night. She was the star of Grease one of the biggest and best movie musicals of all time. Ah, the Friday nights at the drive-in, the high school cliques, the fun and drama of it all. It's rarely been captured so well.

Here is a clip from Grease, and a couple of our other movie musical favs!

To even come close to match the excellence of Grease, we have to rewind a bit to a more serious story, where a 50's Romeo and Juliet come to realize that their romance was never to be. West Side Story features the music of Leonard Bernstein, whose compositions can get stuck in your head for years.

It's amazing how the plot lines of some of these musicals can teach us historical lessons. The Sound of Music brings us to pre-World War II Austria, and uses the backdrop of those current events to create a story with depth and drama. What really counts in a movie musical? The MUSIC! This one spawned more melodic hits than you can shake a conductor's stick at!

Again, take an historic event, add a personal plot and music, and voila! Another big hit. This time, it's the Diaspora. As the Jews are forced out of yet another spot, Tevye must also deal with the modernization of the younger generation while trying to hold his family together.

This is the slice of life from the plains of America. Good guys, bad guys, and people might say their in love. An all time classic!
