MTV Classic Bringing Back ‘Daria,’ ‘Beavis and Butt-Head’ and More (VIDEO)
One doesn’t have to be out-of-touch to not recognize MTV anymore, or malign the dearth of ‘90s staples like Beavis & Butt-Head, or later years like Clone High or Pimp My Ride. Luckily, MTV will return to its roots with an MTV Classic channel as early as next week, bringing back a treasure-trove of your old favorites.
Per The Hollywood Reporter and Vulture, August 1 will see VH1 Classic rebranded as MTV Classic, said to focus on ‘90s programming, with specific returns for shows like Daria, Beavis & Butt-head, Aeon Flux, Run’s House, Pimp My Ride, Cribs, Jackass, Punk’d, Wonder Showzen, Clone High (!) and more. The move comes as part of a process to digitize all the network’s key assets from the last 35 years, previously recorded “on over 1 million physical tapes.”
So reads the initial schedule:
On launch day — which also happens to mark the 35th anniversary of MTV’s August 1, 1981, premiere — MTV Classic will kick off by airing the very first hour of MTV as first seen during the Reagan administration. Monday’s schedule will also include a marathon of MTV Unplugged episodes (including Nirvana and Oasis), a Total Request Live documentary, and a prime-time animation block featuring Beavis, Daria, and Aeon Flux. MTV Classic plans to have theme nights of prime-time programming built around the aforementioned series, as well as Pimp My Ride, Jackass, and Run’s House. There will also be decade-specific video blocks during the day, concert specials, and movies, while weekends will feature marathons of various series. First up: season one of The Real World on Sunday, August 7.
