Man Dies After Pickup Fell 183 feet From Cliff, Caught Fire Near Cañon City
Colorado State Troopers report that a man was pronounced dead at the scene after his truck veered off a cliff near Cañon City.
A 1977 Chevrolet pickup was travelling southbound on Shelf Road, an unpaved, narrow and winding section of the Gold Belt Scenic Byway that connects Cañon City to Cripple Creek, around noon when it veered off of the the road, falling 183 feet down the cliffside.
The truck rolled as it fell, then caught fire once it finally landed on its wheels. The Chevy driver was wearing his seat belt.
Troopers don't suspect drugs nor alcohol as factors in the incident.
A small brush fire started in the area due to the crash, which closed the road for a few hours.
