Big Changes Made to a Colorado City’s Weed Laws + More to Come
Although Colorado legalized recreational marijuana some time ago, the laws, rules, and regulations are constantly changing. For one Colorado city, a few of the rules were changed very recently, while it appears that more changes are on the way.
What's Going on with Brighton Colorado's Marijuana Laws?
The city of Brighton, Colorado is located just northeast of Denver and has seen some significant changes in 2024 already.
Prior to these changes, an ordinance regarding marijuana sales in the city was passed but tabled until the last election in an effort to wait until the new council members were instated.
Most recently on January 23, 2024, the city council discussed a change to the ordinance that would allow dispensaries to set up shop in more parts of the city than before and remove the rule that states that they must be at least 1,500 feet away from one another.
While the revamping of the ordinance increases the number of zones in which the dispensaries can operate from one to three, the downtown area of the city remains off-limits.
It also appears that the allocation of the tax money collected from marijuana sales will go to a general fund as opposed to the previously proposed plan to allocate the revenue to the local police force. Supporters of this change cite the fact that police would receive tax revenue from a general fund anyway.
The measure also states that dispensaries can only operate in the city of Brighton between the hours of 9 a.m. and 9 p.m., but some city council members feel that this should be changed as well to better mirror the hours of operation that liquor stores must adhere to.
The Brighton City Council will vote on the ordinance and possible changes on February 6, 2024.
