5 Things to Know Before Going to Carter Lake in Northern Colorado
Northern Colorado is home to some incredible lakes. There are beautiful alpine lakes in the Rocky Mountains, some larger lakes that are popular, and some hidden gems that are well-kept secrets. Some of the lakes this summer have gotten sad as water levels continue to fall, and some are closing for the season; fish are dying, and boats are being banned. Some lakes are still fully functional, and with some hot days still on the way, there are some good lake days left on the calendar. Carter Lake is one of the more popular lakes in Northern Colorado, but there are some things you should know before you go.
Lack of Phone Service

If you are planning to meet with someone at the beach, it is best to have a plan ahead of time, as phone service isn't guaranteed at the lake. You may find a bar or two, but that doesn't mean your friend has any. It can make it hard to communicate and meet each other. Have a plan set ahead of time or make sure to meet at the gate.
Boat Rentals at Carter Lake

Many lakes in Colorado have been shutting down boat usage due to the low water levels. Carter Lake is still allowing boat rentals. The lake offers plenty of room for tubing, fishing, or just driving around the lake. You must rent for a minimum of 3 hours and can rent pontoons or a fishing boat. Wear Water Shoes

Wearing water shoes to protect your feet is always wise when going to the lake, but especially at Carter Lake. The beach area is filled with sharp rocks that will hurt the bottom of your feet, but it doesn't end on the beach. As you enter the water, there are hidden jagged rocks in the water, and you need to be careful with each step, or you could slip and cut your legs or cut your feet. There are also broken bottles around the shoreline occasionally to keep an eye out for.
Be Prepared to Sink

Not only do you have to worry about the rocks, but there is thick mud that can feel like quicksand near the shoreline. This makes it hard to run in and out of the water, and don't be surprised if you lose a sandal or two if you take them down to the water. This is another reason to have water shoes so that you don't lose or break your sandals.
Be Prepared to Hike to the Beach

When going to an alpine lake you typically have to hike to your destination, but when going to a lake like Carter Lake, you expect to park and be able to carry your things to your spot pretty easily. Unfortunately, the parking lots are a decent amount away from the good beach spots, and you will need to make a few trips and have a long walk to the beach to set up for the day.
