Old Town Ft. Collins Might Bring Back Paid Parking
Fort Collins may be bringing back paid on-street parking to Old Town for the first time in 60 years. Based on the current proposals, it looks like the cost would be from $1.50–$2.00 per hour for street parking. The good news is this won’t be a 24-hour rule.
You'll have to pay to park Monday through Saturday from 10 AM to 8 PM. That means if you are planning on a late-night dinner (because 8 PM is incredibly late for me), you'll be all good.
There could be a possible short grace period for quick in-and-out stops, like grabbing food, because that would be incredibly annoying to pay for just a quick walk in.
Payment will be taken through kiosks, which are sooooo confusing to me! Every time I try to use a kiosk, it feels like I'm answering 20 questions, from my license plate number to registration. And it's usually frigid and cold.
You can also download an app called ParkMobile, which is pretty dang convenient.
Here's the Old Town paid parking proposal
- Street parking = free (2-hour limit)
- Garages = paid (about $1/hour, first hour free)
Here's why official changes have been according to the Fort Collins Coloradoan
- Currently, it's kind of an “upside-down system” because the best, closest spots are free and less convenient ones cost money. So… huh? This seems a little backwards to me.
- Now there are over 1,300+ street spaces, and additionally, the 2-hour limit on parking is changing to a 4-hour block.
- Drivers spend time looping Old Town looking for free spots
- Meanwhile… garages sit partially empty
The system is losing money
- Parking garages currently operate at a financial loss
Growth is making it worse
- More people = less availability
- More congestion
