Tragic Death of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University Sparks Controversy

A tragic incident in Utah last week is causing some conflicts right here in Northern Colorado.

On Wednesday, September 10th conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, was killed at Utah Valley University while speaking outdoors.

He was 31 years old.

Memorial Set Up in Loveland Subject of Police Investigation

Over the weekend, a memorial to Kirk was put up outside of a home in Loveland.

On Saturday, September 13th, officials were called to the 200 block of E. 23rd at around 11:15 PM,  according to a press release from the Loveland Police Department.

They were responding to a call of a possible "arson and criminal mischief incident."

A resident had placed a memorial to Charlie Kirk on their front yard fence, which read, “RIP Charlie Kirk, we stand with you," and was surrounded by American flags and solar lights.

Loveland law enforcement reports that someone ignited the memorial, and threw a large rock at the rear window of the resident’s vehicle. They claim it caused "extensive damage."

Luckily, the Loveland Fire and Rescue Authority was able to put out the fire.

Loveland Police Chief Tim Doran, said that detectives immediately began investigating this case.

"What is particularly troubling about this incident is the chilling effect this arsonist is attempting to impact on free speech and expression. We will not abide criminal conduct in our city, whether it be Tesla bombing terrorists, those setting fire to memorials like this, or any other heinous offenses in between," the police chief said in a statement on social media.

"The Loveland Police Department is committed to protecting and serving our residents without favor or bias.”

Suspect Apprehended in Loveland Arson Case

Just a few days later, officials confirmed that a suspect has been apprehended.

Not much is being released about the person taken into custody concerning this incident in Northern Colorado.

The Loveland Police Department did confirm in a follow up press release that the suspect is a man from Loveland and that he was arrested on Monday, September 15th.

This remains an ongoing investigation.
