JCPenney Sells 119 Stores in Major All-Cash Deal

A massive department store brand is selling more than a hundred of its locations.

Approximately five years ago, JCPenney filed for bankruptcy.

Now, a Boston private equity firm is buying out 119 of their stores, according to USA Today.

JCPenney Bankruptcy Update: What’s Happening in 2025?

The report mentions that this is an "all-cash-sale" and that they will pay approximately $947 million for all of these locations. This payout will allegedly go to pay off JCPenney creditors.

There are currently 650 store locations across the country.

All of the stores that are included in the deal are still open for business, according to reports.

This deal stretches across 35 states. The locations with the biggest number of affected stores are Texas (21) and California (19).

Which JCPenney Locations Are Being Sold?

Out of the 119 locations set to be sold, only two of them are here in Colorado.

In a report from 9News out of Denver, the locations that will go under new ownership in the Centennial State are:

  • Town Center at Aurora - 14200 E Alameda Ave - Aurora, CO
  • First & Main Town Center - 3650 New Center Pt - Colorado Springs, CO
When Will the JCPenney Store Sale Be Final?

This sale is set to close around September 8th, 2025.
