Last year, Walgreens announced that they would likely be closing about 1,200 total stores across the United States the next few years, though at the time, the exact locations weren't identified. They did say at the time approximately 500 of them would be closed in 2025, and it appears they've begun to identify some of the ones they'll be locking up for good.

The drug store chain has seen financial issues in recent times, with increased competition from online retailers like Amazon, in addition to the usual competitors like CVS - who are also closing stores in the coming years - plus mega stores like Walmart and Target.

In a statement Monday, Walgreens said the company is challenged by an increase in regulations with regard to their reimbursements that affect their ability to pay for staff, rent and inventory.

They allegedly will be closing five locations across the state of Colorado, beginning next month, starting in Denver and Aurora. Whether or not additional locations will be closed this year or in the coming years remains to be seen, but the company confirmed to 9News in Denver that will be closing these locations:

  • 3555 Colorado Blvd., Denver
  • 6360 E. Evans Ave., Denver
  • 12051 E. Mississippi Ave., Aurora
  • 15301 E. Iliff Ave., Aurora
  • 1601 W. 84th Avenue, Federal Heights

San Francisco, California reportedly will have the most locations closed next month, with up to 12 different locations shutting down before the end of Q1.
