Remember when late actor Luke Perry appeared on the cover of AARP? That was one of those eye-opening moments reminding us that we are all aging. There are several communities in Weld County becoming part of the AARP Age-Friendly Community Network.

The AARP mission "is to empower people to choose how they live as they age. ... From health and financial tools, volunteering opportunities, travel, and restaurant discounts, to everything in between, if it has to do with enriching the lives of people 50-plus." It costs about $16 a year to become a member.

So what does an AARP Age-Friendly Community entail? According to the press release these communities in Evans, Garden City and Greeley will be "more livable and better able to support people of all ages when local leaders commit to improving the quality of life for the very young, the very old and everyone in between. AARP says that well-designed, age-friendly communities foster growth and make for happier, healthier residents of all ages." This includes housing, outdoor spaces, transportation, communication, employment, social inclusion, health services, and more.
