DUI Sobriety Checkpoint Scheduled

On May 27, Fort Collins Police, in conjunction with the Larimer County DUI Taskforce, will host a multi-agency DUI Sobriety Checkpoint in Fort Collins. Sobriety Checkpoints are utilized in an effort to reduce the incidents of intoxicated and impaired motorists being involved in collisions. The checkpoints are also a law enforcement tool to apprehend the impaired motorists before they injure others and destroy property.

This event is sponsored by the Colorado Department of Transportation, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Colorado State Patrol, Poudre Valley Hospital, Poudre Valley Ambulance Services, Colorado State University Police Department, Larimer County Sheriff’s Office, Loveland Police Department and the Fort Collins Police Department.

In addition to removing impaired motorists, the checkpoint is aimed at increasing awareness of driving impaired and the consequences for those who do. Over 11,000 people were killed by impaired motorists in 2010 and another 250,000 were injured. Of the 900,000 people arrested each year for DUI/ DWAI, one-third are repeat offenders. Property Damage is also estimated to be in the billions of dollars per the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s estimates.
