If You Love Ice Cream You Need to Visit Colorado’s Oldest Dairy Queen
Living in Colorado can be a treat in itself, with all the beauty and activities the state has. Having a treat, food-wise, now and again is important. Why not hit the oldest DQ in the state?
Dairy Queen and 'The Blues Brothers' Have Something in Common
Dairy Queen got its start back in 1940 in Joliet, Illinois. I always flash to the movie, "The Blues Brothers" when someone mentions Joliet, as John Belushi played 'Joliet' Jake Blues. I can see the boys enjoying some soft serve and a chili cheese dog, can't you?
Loveland's Dairy Queen has won multiple awards regarding sales, but they are not the oldest DQ in Colorado.
Often times, you can use Google Maps to see what "used to be" at locations; when it comes to Colorado's oldest DQ, you'd be out of luck. The building has been a Dairy Queen since long before Google cars were traveling around taking photos. Colorado's oldest Dairy Queen was established just nine years after the company began, back in 1940.
Colorado's Oldest Dairy Queen is on Main Street in Longmont
It's hard to imagine how Main Street in Longmont must have looked in 1949, as compared to today, but one thing that hasn't changed (a whole lot) is the Dairy Queen near the corner of Main and 6th, as that's when Colorado's oldest DQ opened.

Generation after generation has not only enjoyed the treats served at this Longmont DQ, but have also served those treats. I'm sure there have been many parents taking their kids for DQ ice cream telling their kids, "You know, I used to work here..." "No way!" Ice cream is about fun, that's for sure.
