Colorado’s Haunted Mine Drop Named Best New Amusement Park Attraction
If you're a theme park enthusiast on the hunt for your next big thrill, look no further than Colorado's own Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park, where you can find the Haunted Mine Drop — a ride that's just been named by USA Today as the "Best New Amusement Park Attraction" in the entire country.
The Haunted Mine Drop, which first opened back in July of 2017, is the world's first drop ride to actually take passengers underground, where it goes 110 feet deep inside Colorado's Iron Mountain. As riders get strapped in, ghostly miners appear and tell tales of a mining tragedy from long ago, which serves as an even eerier distraction to the floor sliding out from underneath as the drop begins. More ghosts show up at the bottom of the mine shaft to continue the tale before riders are taken back up to exit.
To compile the list of "Best New Amusement Park Attractions," travel experts first selected 20 nominees. Then, USA Today readers did their own voting to help narrow the picks down to ten. The top 10 were:
- Haunted Mine Drop, Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park
- Mystic Timbers, King Island
- Hydrus, Casino Pier
- North Star, Valleyfair
- Drop Line, Dollywood
- Mine Blower, Fun Spot America
- Wave Breaker: The Rescue Coaster, SeaWorld San Antonio
- Rollin’ Thunder, OWA
- Pandora – The World of Avatar, Disney’s Animal Kingdom
- Wonder Woman Lasso of Truth, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom
It also wasn't too long ago that this same Colorado attraction made USA Today's list for the "12 most anticipated theme park rides of 2017." Are you daring enough to take the drop?
