The Colorado State Patrol is not made up of world-class athletes - but, with all eyes on the Olympics, we have been made to realize these troopers are well-trained for the sport of curling.

Colorado State Troopers Make Great Curlers

The sport of curling has been around since the 1800s, originating in Scotland, but, it has never really caught on here in America. There has been an increase in the popularity and awareness of the sport, ever since it became part of the Olympics in 1998. With all eyes on the Olympics, it seems appropriate that the Colorado State Patrol would showcase their Olympic skills.

In the video, State Trooper Lewis, with tongue-in-cheek, says troopers have spent years honing their skills and habits, making them ideal candidates for curling.

Troopers' Special Diet Prepares Them For the Cold

For example, Trooper Lewis says their traditional diet (donuts) provides them with natural insulation to survive cold weather.

Cones or Stones, It's All the Same

Then there's the idea of being able to strategically place traffic cones at incidence scenes. If they can slide traffic cones, surely they can skillfully slide curling stones.

Sweeping Skills Are Essential

Troopers possess the inborn ability to clear every flake of snow out of every nook and cranny of their patrol vehicle. That means the sweeping muscles can go for hours with no need for a recovery area.

Maneuvering On Ice Is Harder Than It Looks

And then there is the fact that troopers can spend hours at a time at ground-blizzard crash scenes. This helps troopers to maneuver on ice as easily as if it were concrete. Of course, at the end of the video,  you'll see this isn't necessarily the case.

While the U.S. Curling team is well-set, Trooper Lewis points out that should the need arise for replacements, the U.S. Olympic Team can count on Colorado state troopers to step in and help bring home the gold.
