Colorado Police K9 Loses Leg After Being Attacked and Stabbed Multiple Times
There are many of "man's best friends" among Colorado law enforcement agencies, assisting in the execution of several duties. To think of any Colorado K9 officer getting gravely injured while on duty, hurts the heart. These dogs are brave and well-trained, but when the subject the team is after gets the upper hand, things can go bad.
Of course, being a human police officer has its perils, but it's different when the officer is a dog. Their unconditional love, while also being a tough and highly-trained officer, makes them beloved members of any team that they're a part of. When a K9 officer retires, they always get a party; a party that they don't quite understand, but that's OK.
On October 15, 2025, K9 Officer Roam, part of the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD,) was gravely injured when officers responded to a report of a domestic violence protection order violation. Upon the PDs arrival, a suspected had barricaded himself inside the residence; CSPD deployed a tactical and a K9 personnel to assist in resoling the situation.
According to CSPD, K9 Roam, along with his handler, and the tactical team confronted the suspect. During the confrontation, the suspect stabbed K9 Roam several times. He was immediately taken to a local veterinary hospital in critical condition. After several surgeries, including having to amputate Roam's left hind leg, Roam was set to be released from the hospital on October 18, 2025.
K9 Roam had just recently joined the CSPD, and was the department's first Certified Gun Detection Dog. Donations were being taken to help Roam in his recovery and medical expenses at http://policefoundationofcoloradosprings.org.
