While late December and early January were somewhat devoid of snowfall, the murmurs of disgust and panic that I heard on the chairlifts were understandable, yet probably unfounded. Early January is usually pretty average when it comes to snow conditions. A stretch through this time of year with no powder days is strange and quite a bummer, but no reason to panic. The snow will fall in the Rocky Mountains. It is a certainty, and that inevitability has arrived this week.

Vail reported 10 inches last night. Winter Park has a base of over 40 inches. Steamboat is enjoying 11 new inches today. All is right with the world.

I have friends that come to Colorado for a visit every ski season, and we do not allow them to even consider doing it in January. February and March are the true snow months. We'll get a dump here and there in January, but come Groundhog Day, it's time for the fun to begin.
