I remember back during Spring Training, some of the Rockies players were quoted as saying even though they were a young team, they had the potential to be a really good team this season.

What they probably didn't anticipate at the time - even though the rest of us did - was a 7-33 record to start the season.

They won 9-3 on Sunday, but Saturday afternoon they put up a clunker, losing 21-0 to the San Diego Padres, only the sixth team in MLB history to be shutout by 21+ runs.

It also tied them with another dubious honor. Going into Sunday's game, their 6-33 record was tied for the worst ever start through 39 games, with the 1988 Baltimore Orioles.

Yes, the Rockies really are THAT bad. So bad that a mere 40-games into the 2025, the team announced their dismissal of a couple scapegoats - manager Bud Black and bench coach Mike Redmond, effective immediately.

Black has been the Rockies manager since November, 2016 and last season, became the winningest manager in the history of the franchise. Which isn't saying much, because it came in the midst of a 100-loss season, and his overall record with the club is 543-685.

I don't want to sound like Captain Obvious here, but are we SURE that Black and Redmond were the problem?

Look no further than Rockies Owner and CEO Dick Monfort for the answer to that question:

Our play so far this season, especially coming off the last two seasons, has been unacceptable. Our fans deserve better, and we are capable of better. While we all share responsibility in how this season has played out, these changes are necessary. We will use the remainder of 2025 to improve where we can on the field and to evaluate all areas of our operation so we can properly turn the page into the next chapter of Rockies Baseball.

"While we all share responsibility in how this season has played out." That's the quote right there. Many fans feel like ownership is entirely responsible for how it's all playing out. Yet the one guy who does all the firing is the one who will never fire himself.
