Having your phone with you at all times has become a part of nearly every Coloradan's life, including students. More school districts are restricting students usage, however, and it's not likely to slow down.

Technology advances quicker than ever; even today's generation of high-schoolers will be shocked by what's available to their own kids when they reach high school. The technology can be distracting in a place where students are supposed to be learning.

The restrictions can be about more than getting kids to pay attention, however.

Cell Phone Restrictions Bound to Become Common in Colorado Schools

In November of 2024, the Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) joined a list of Colorado school districts enacting policies restricting students from their smart phones.

BVSD high school students will have to store their phones away for the entire school day, once the new policy officially begins.

Students and parents can make many arguments about how students need to at least be able to check messages on their devices when there's a break during the school day, but more parents and students in Colorado will have to start adapting.

Juul Settlement Will Mean More Smart Phone Restrictions in Colorado

In July of 2024, Colorado was awarded $17. 4 million in settlement with Juul, for targeting the young people of Colorado. It's easy to forget all the advertising that Juul was doing, just a few years ago.

In October of 2024, the Colorado Attorney General's Office announced that they would use a portion of that settlement to give $50,000 to school districts in Colorado that create polices that restrict phone usage in classrooms.

Colorado School Districts Need Money, Here's an Easy Way to Get Some

I know that the Thompson School District was hoping voters would agree to a couple of measures to provide funding for the school district, for maintenance and teachers salaries, but those measures failed.

Why wouldn't Thompson School District look at phone restrictions, to get $50,000? Why wouldn't all school districts in Colorado that need a little extra money do it?
