Colorado Agreed to Pay Convicted Murderer $500,000

Jayson Oslund and his brother Kelly beat an 18-year-old Pueblo boy to death in September 2009.

According to Denver Post, Jayson is serving a life term for the felony murder while his brother's sentence was reduced to 13 years, Kelly has since been paroled.

In March of last year U.S. Magistrate Judge Kathleen Tafoya ruled a record $6 million verdict and, according to Denver Post, took the unusual measure of granting Oslund's request for an immediate dismissal before the jury could deliberate.

After court proceedings, his settlement has been reduced to $500,000. Additionally, he will be moved to a correctional facility in Pueblo to be near his family.

An inmate testified that former prison guard Mitchel Mullen lammed Oslund into a wall and straddled him while demanding that Oslund stop resisting.

Denver Post reported that Oslund sued Mullen suffered a seizure associated with his epilepsy following this incident. Mullen denied the allegations saying he was trying to assist Oslund.

“At this point we do not have a signed agreement so it would be premature to comment further,” Department of Corrections spokeswoman Annie Skinner wrote in an email to The Post.
