Cheyenne police are issuing a warning about a new type of scam targeting businesses.

Officer Kevin Malatesta says a man is calling local businesses claiming to be the manager or a corporate employee.

"He's telling people that the business in under audit, that some employees have been stealing and that he needs to perform an emergency audit," said Malatesta.

"Then he'll have the employee gather cash, put things together and could possibly come to the location, pickup money from the location and just simply leave with that cash," he added.

Malatesta says the scammer has also done his homework and may know names of employees, including managers, who work at the business.

"He's using names and information that's probably out to the public, but makes it seem like he's actually working for that business," said Malatesta.

Malatesta says the man has been targeting grocery and dollar stores, but he urges every business to be on the lookout for this kind of thing.

"Anybody who's receiving this type of phone call should be highly skeptical," said Malatesta. "I'd encourage them to talk to their managers (and) corporate offices before doing anything further."
