Canine Distemper Confirmed in Larimer County Raccoons

According to a post on the City of Fort Collins Natural Areas Facebook page, canine distemper has been confirmed in raccoons in Larimer County.

Distemper is a viral disease that can end up affecting multiple body systems in dogs, including gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts, and even the brain. PetMD explains that canine distemper can be spread through the air and by direct or indirect contact with an infected animal. Common symptoms of canine distemper in dogs include things like vomiting, lethargy, clear nasal discharge, coughing and diarrhea. If your dog is displaying any of these signs, it's a good idea to call your vet right away.

In this case, the city is cautioning residents to avoid contact with wild animals such as bats, skunks, foxes, and especially raccoons - whether they are dead or alive. It's also a good reminder to make sure that your pets are always kept on a leash, and stay up to date with their vaccinations.

If you or your pet does come into direct contact with wildlife, call the Larimer County Health Department at 970-498-6775. In addition, residents can report abnormally acting wild animals to the Larimer Humane Society at 970-226-3647 ext. 7.
