It happens all across Colorado this time of year... the first snow and/or ice build up on windshields form overnight and people go out to their car in the morning to head to work, only to discover they meant to buy a new ice scraper after tossing their old one out over the summer. Or maybe you loaned it to someone else back in the spring and never got it back.

Regardless, what do you do when you're caught in a pinch with a frozen windshield and nothing to scrape it with? Fear not... here are some solutions.

Credit Card Scraper

This is the most obvious go-to, aside from the fact all the ice chips will get on your hands and freeze them. That said, a flimsy credit card will only work on a thin later of ice.

Spatula Scraper

Those rubber-like silicone spatulas probably won't work that great... you'll need a hardcore metal BBQ one to get the job done. But be careful you don't scratch the windshield!

Saltwater Melt

If the county can spread salt on the road to melt ice, it should work on your windshield, right? Sort of... just be sure to mix it with tepid water (hot water may crack your windshield!). Spray it on and watch the saltwater do its thing. Also, make sure to rinse because salt water is bad for metal parts on your car.

Rubbing Alcohol - Kind of

Apparently rubbing alcohol melts ice. I've never tried it. Apparently spraying a two part alcohol to one part room temp water mix on the windshield will melt the ice in less than two minutes, letting your windshield wipers push it away. Worth a shot.

Let Your Car Warm Up

When all else fails, just turn on your defrost. Make sure you know the laws in your area about letting your car run unoccupied to warm up!

Vinegar and Water Preventative Spray

Allegedly a mixture of vinegar and water sprayed on the windshield the night before will help prevent ice from building up in the first place. Who knew!?
