The first photos of the Earth from orbit were taken on this day all the way back in 1966. Although they weren't as widely circulated as photos taken later during some of the Apollo missions, just viewing these photos were among the catalyst that inspired environmental movements across the globe. Before this, it was actually impossible to see 'the forest for the trees'.

I think they are especially powerful because of the comparative beauty of our planet compared to other celestial bodies. The stark, white landscape of the moon can be awe inspiring, but nothing about it makes me want to visit. Mars' red exterior is a reminder of an automobile in a sad state. While Jupiter has a multitude of colors, they don't beckon. But the soothing blue glow of the Earth mixed with the whites, browns and greens just screams life. It looks special...and it is special.
