Move aside glitter beer, the newest and hottest beer trend to hit Northern Colorado is sour beer. Breweries have been around Northern Colorado for well over 20 years, but they have only really taken off over the last few years. Maybe that’s because people are starting to appreciate how breweries are constantly trying to create new and exciting beer to keep up with changing trends, the newest of which is sour beer. There are a lot of misconceptions about sour beer, but I am here to share the best places to give them a shot in Fort Collins.

1. New Belgium- New Belgium is considered the first brewery to start brewing sour beer, they even went on to create the category for sour beer at the Great American Beer Festival in 2000. This is a great place to try sour beer and if you have never been on a New Belgium tour, you need to go take one ASAP. If you do, you’ll get a first-hand look at how the aging process works for sour beer, and get a sample of whichever sour beer they are currently brewing. Seriously, I can’t recommend this enough, because there is no better way to enjoy a sour beer than straight from the barrel itself.

2. Funkwerks- Funkwerks is well known for their sour beers. They offer a wide variety of different flavors from pineapple to apricot, so they have a sour beer for everyone. The best way to experience this new trend, especially if you’re a first-timer, is to get the sour flight, where you can try four different sour beers.

3. Maxline Brewing- The main reason Maxline is on this list is because I have a personal connection with it-- it has my all time favorite sour beer. It’s called Blueberry Lime Sour and it is the perfect flavor to try if you have never tried a sour beer before. It’s not too sour and the blueberries give it a hint of sweetness that make it a must try.

4. Odell Brewing Company- Whether you choose to enjoy your beer at Odell or in the comfort of your own home, they offer 8 different sour beers for you to indulge in. Depending on the time of year, Odell will bottle and can some of their most popular sour brews, the newest of which is Sippin’ Pretty (I would highly recommend this one).

5. Black Bottle Brewery- Black Bottle Brewing always has up to 5 different sour beers on tap, depending on the time of the year. They even have seasonal sour beers, so you can celebrate all your favorite holidays in your favorite, sour way.

6. Purpose Brewing and Cellars- The owner of Purpose was originally a brewmaster with New Belgium before branching off and starting this brewery. It goes without saying, Purpose knows how to brew some amazing sour beer. They even offer some of their sours right out of the barrel. So head on over to Purpose Brewing and Cellars to drink straight from a master.
