For nearly two years, the City of Loveland has been working on renovating the streets in Downtown. The railway that runs through Colorado has a crossing that needs to be replaced as part of the project.

Why Are They Closing 4th Street at Railroad Avenue in Loveland?

According to a release from the City of Loveland, the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railway is going to do a complete replacement of items of the crossing at 4th Street from September 21, 2026 to September 24, 2026:

  • The rails.
  • The crossing panels.
  • The underlying ballast rock underneath the railroad tracks.

You would think that the crossing arms would be replaced; apparently, they're OK. The City states that the replacements will not only make things smoother at the crossing, but they will add to the long-term safety and mobility as well.

No pedestrians or vehicles will be able to travel in the area; pedestrians will need to use the legal crossings at 1st Street and at 6th Street. Those are pretty far from 4th Street from a pedestrian's perspective, for sure. I would say "plan your trip accordingly" and park so that you don't have to worry about heading that way at all.

There's no question that since February of 2025, the struggle has been real when it comes to dealing with the upgrades that 4th Street has been getting. Businesses have suffered, and people have missed coming Downtown. With things very close to being done, another "hassle" has to be overcome before we can all breathe a sigh of relief.
