2 Bull Elk Vehicle Crashes Reported in Northern Colorado On Friday
Now is as good of a time as any to keep your eyes on the road.
Officials from the Colorado State Patrol reported two bull elk vehicle crashes on Friday (Sept. 25 morning):
- Highway 34 west of Loveland
- Interstate 25 near the Berthoud exit
We are in prime elk breeding season according to the national Park Service, which says that the peak of the season typically begins in mid-September and lasts until mid-October; Although, it is not uncommon to hear elk bulging through November.
During peak season, it is possible to see up to hundreds of elk at a time gathering in areas of Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP). If you find yourself in RMNP, here are a few tips to consider when viewing elk during bulging season from visitgrandcountry.com:
- Don't disturb or threaten the elk. Stay as quiet as possible while viewing (this includes turning your car's engine off)
- Never get too close to the elk. If they catch your eye or start moving away from you, you're too close
- Turn all lights off (car lights, flashlights, cell phones, etc.).
It is important to be extra cautious while driving, as wildlife in the area is active at this time. As requested by the Colorado State Patrol, if you are involved in a crash with wildlife, please call 911 to report the incident.
