You may be seeing them all over Colorado, now. Cars, trucks, and SUVs, with the "new" old license plates, most of which are black.

While they seem to be taking the state by storm, are we leaving something behind?

While the money raised from these plates goes to a good cause, the Colorado Disability Funding Committee, there may come a time when we look back at these plates as we did to "New Coke."

When word got out that "black license plates" would be available for Colorado drivers, it nearly broke the internet. Thousands of Coloradans jumped on them, many had to wait to get them. Now, you do see them out there on the Colorado roads more and more.

ARE THESE 'BLACK/RETIRED BACKGROUND' LICENSE PLATES IN COLORADO A BAD THING?

When you ask someone with these plates why they got them, you may hear:

I wanted to look cool; stylish.

I liked how it matched my truck's color.

THESE 'BLACK/RETIRED BACKGROUND' PLATES ARE TAKING SOMETHING AWAY

For decades, Colorado drivers have had license plates that "represent" the Centennial State. Mountains. It's who we are: A state within the Rocky Mountains. Not that those aren't still available, but.

ARE COLORADANS TAKING STYLE OVER STATE PRIDE?

For so many years, every Coloradan vehicle has been driving around with a "Colorado-themed" license plate. It's like us all being a fan of a team, and all wearing a version of that team's jersey. Now, with these "basic black" plates, where's the "team pride?"

JUST A BUNCH OF NUMBERS OUT ON THE COLORADO ROADS

Think of all the ways that Coloradans have to show their personalities when it comes to the license plate on their car: Broncos, Pioneer, Girl Scouts, Fire Fighter, CSU, Colorado Rockies, etc.

Now, with these "super basic" plates, there's a trend happening where we are becoming just numbers. No personality, no style; worst of all: No "Colorado"

WILL THESE BLACK LICENSE PLATES LAST LONG?

Perhaps those with these "new" retired plates will ride around for a couple of years and then miss those days when they had "Colorado" license plates, and go back.
