In the most recent update to mask mandates in Northern Colorado schools, the Weld RE-4 School District has announced they will require masks starting Friday, Sept. 10.

The Board of Education approved the new mandate on Wednesday, Sept. 8. The requirement will affect students not only in school but on buses as well, in accordance with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment's advice.

Any students, visitors, staff, and spectators will be required to mask up under the new mandate. However, masks will not be required outdoors on school grounds.

As far as athletics go under the new mandate, athletes actively participating in their sports on the court or playing surface will not be required to wear a mask. However, any player sitting on the sidelines not actively playing will have to have a mask on.

Even though the mandate has been put in place, the school district has not set any capacity limitations of any kind.

The school has also informed parents to contact school nurses for any inquiries about waivers for medical conditions.

In case of an outbreak, which the district has defined as five or more cases in one classroom or students in a group from different households, they are holding to the original remote learning procedure: anyone involved in the outbreak will be switched to remote learning and quarantine for 14 days.

The district reiterated their priority being student safety. They have made it clear that any student who is not in compliance with the new requirement will face repercussions as far as removal from the school if there are repeated refusals or disruptions.
