The railway was originally built for transporting mining materials such as silver and was unfortunately abandoned back in 1969. However, the historic railway was rejuvenated and became a sort of tourist attraction only a handful of years later.

The trip takes passengers along a 64-mile journey along the border between Colorado and New Mexico, crossing the border between states a total of 11 times.
