90-Year-Old Historic Colorado Theater Closing for New Development

It was fairly recently that Colorado residents learned of the plan to demolish Boulder's iconic and world-famous Dark Horse bar, an announcement that was met with considerable backlash.

Now, it appears that another staple that has been operating for nearly a century will close its doors for good in favor of a new development.

Denver Colorado's Iconic Esquire Theater to Close for Good

It was announced recently that Denver's historic Esquire Theater will close its doors for good by this coming July after almost 100 years.

The theater first opened its doors at its location of 590 Downey Street in the heart of downtown Denver in 1927 and despite changes in ownership over the years, has continually shown movies ever since.

The theater's current owners, Landmark Theaters, purchased the building back in 1980 and currently own several theaters in the Denver metro area. While Landmark's other theaters will continue to operate as usual, the owners have decided to close the Esquire in favor of upscale office space, retail space, and a restaurant.

However, unlike the Dark Horse's fate, the building that has housed The Esquire all these years will not be demolished. Instead, Landmark Theaters will be utilizing the City of Denver's Adaptive Reuse program to ensure that the historic site will remain preserved in the process.

While The Esquire Theater has been showing movies for many years, recent times have seen screenings of primarily independent films as opposed to, say, Lord of the Rings.

Regardless, by this July, Coloradans will no longer be able to make fond memories of watching films at the historic Esquire Theater.
