Where Are Colorado's Highest Elevated Campgrounds?

Located at over 10,000 feet in the San Juan Mountains, America's highest campgrounds are in Colorado's San Juan County. Molas Lake and Little Molas Lake campgrounds provide spectacular views, excellent fishing, and a chance to enjoy the Rocky Mountains high above the hustle and bustle. Molas Lake Campground sits at an elevation of 10,522 feet, while Little Molas Lake Campground allows you to pitch a tent at 11,000 feet.

Camping at Molas Lakes Campground

Owned by the city of Silverton, Molas Campground has been named by AAA as the 'most scenic campground' in the Centennial State. That says a lot considering all the camping you can do inside our many State and National Parks.

Molas Campground consists of 137 acres surrounded by some of the San Juan mountain's incredible peaks including Grand Turk, Sultan, Snowdon, N-1, N-2, N-3, and Electric Peak. The campground can be found off Highway 550 between Silverton and Durango.

Camping at Little Molas Lake Campground

If Molas Campground isn't high enough, you can travel further up the road to access Little Molas Lake Campground at 11,000 feet. While there are only 10 campsites here, they are primitive enough to be available at no charge.

Both campgrounds offer access to the Alpine Loop Scenic Byway and the Molas Pass during warmer months when the snow finally melts. The campgrounds are open 7 days a week from June 1st to September 30th and require a reservation.
