Could Hikers in Colorado Be Picking Up Their Own Poop Soon?
When nature calls, you answer. It really doesn't matter where you are, sometimes your body tells you that you have to go. It might be at the office, in the comfort of your own home, or on the side of a mountain in Colorado.
One Colorado company wants to change the way hikers and outdoor enthusiasts deal with poo in Colorado's mountains. PACT Outdoors has installed WAG Bags on a Colorado fourteener. While these bags are poop bags, they are not for your dog, they are for those hiking in Colorado's high country.
In case you didn't know, if you go number two in the forest, you are not supposed to just leave it there. The "Leave No Trace" motto means just that. You don't leave anything you brought with you to the forest. That means whatever is in your backpack, vehicle, or inside of your body.
Picking Up Your Poop in Colorado's Forests
PACT Outdoors built a kiosk at the trailhead of Mount Elbert that was stocked with WAG Bags and a sanitary bin for the disposal of human poop bags. The vision of PACT Outdoors is to put WAG Bag kit kiosks and human waste receptacles at all 58 Colorado fourteeners according to Outside Online.
PACT Outdoors told Outside Online that out of the approximate 15,000 hikers that visit Mount Elbert every year, more than 10 percent of the people do a number two on the mountain each season. Year after year, people's poop can pile up quickly.
