Fort Collins Says Outdoor Fires Are Dangerous During COVID-19

Warmer weather is here, and bringing with it the clear nights perfect for lighting up that fire pit that's been dormant in your backyard since 2019.

However, as much as the City of Fort Collins knows you want to light that fire, they're asking you to please, don't.

According to a press release, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment is urging residents to avoid outdoor burning, since "smoke and odor from outdoor burning could exacerbate impacts to already susceptible populations."

COVID-19 is a virus that attacks the respiratory system, and if you live near those that have a history of heart or respiratory illness, you're putting them unnecessarily at risk. If you must burn an outdoor fire, follow the below rules outlined by the city:

• Place fire pits at least 15 feet from combustible surfaces and 15 feet away from property lines
• Burn only clean, dry seasoned wood. Burning trash and yard waste is prohibited
• Keep fuel piles under 3 feet in diameter and less than 2 feet in height
• Have enough airflow to allow for efficient burning
• Fully extinguish fires with water by 10:00 p.m.
