It was a mystery… Who was tossing out all of these books out onto Highway 287 south of Longmont? Furthermore, what did the perpetrator have against THESE books?

Dumped Book

It started before Thanksgiving of 2014. Somebody was tossing books onto the side of Highway 287 between Longmont and Lafayette. It continued up until the end of April. We’re talking about 600 books! Why?

When you find that the books were mostly paperbacks and mostly romance novels, it becomes clear, to me, that this person has a deep burning passion against Fabio. Or just romance novels. This person's passion raged so much, that it would lead them to flinging these books out of their truck, at 50 miles an hour, to meet the asphalt with a resounding ‘thump.’ “Take that, love!”

Well, the Colorado State Patrol apprehended the fellow on Thursday (4/23/15). They charged the 62-year-old Glenn Pladsen with six counts of littering. Upon his arrest, he shed some light on the real reason why these books were getting the heave-ho.

This is a good story; it appears that he had a plan: A used book store in Boulder closed almost ten years ago, and he acquired their stock. He saw himself making some good cash by selling the books online. He blames Amazon for killing that idea. Some would blame the selection of books. A bad romance novel, even cheap, isn’t going to sell.

So, he was stuck with all these cheap books, thousands of them. He claims he didn’t know what to with all the books. He told police that taking the books to Goodwill or the landfill would “mean an extra trip.” Well, we can’t have that, can we? Eventually Glenn came up with his cunning, NEW plan: To dump them along side of the highway as trash. Easy, peasy!

This guy. He thinks he’s minding his own business, just dumping upwards of 1,000 books on his way to work each day. What a helper! Little did HE know that he’d created such a mystery: “Who’s throwing all these books to the side of the road and why?”

Long story short, he’s a bit lazy. Mystery solved!
